Then I got the chain gun sooner than expected, then the plasma gun, and the ammo count upgrade, and suddenly the gameplay felt like a Doom game. It was satisfying to shoot, so I played a little longer. It's weird, because I was so sure I'd drop the game, but then I got the machine gun sooner than I expected. Then I got a few more guns and an ammo surplus, and suddenly the game I came for was in my hands.
#Doom 3 switch series#
I played most of the other games in the series this year so maybe my head was still in Doom (1993) and Doom (2016) mode and I was trying to rush through at times, but even the horror games I've played felt more forgiving than Doom 3's first hour. I know they were trying to give the impression that you were helpless and had to be careful while exploring the station/conserve ammunition/other horror game tropes, but it just got frustrating because I wanted to progress, and I knew the game's shtick, but it felt like the game was telling me "you're not playing correctly!" and I wasn't understanding how I was supposed to play. Hallways are narrow and hard to dodge things in. I kept dying, running out of ammo, fumbling because I could barely see ANYTHING despite the flashlight.

Once you start shooting stuff, however, things get tedious. It transcends plagiarism and just becomes cute how many story beats and enemy types in this game are copied from Half Life to the point that I can't be mad at it (like, the spiders and masked zombies have to be ripping off Half-Life, right?). I also think it's adorable just how much they rip off Half-Life's intro. I actually like the game's intro, I think having some tension and downtime before you actually start fighting is a nice change of pace from the "drop you in and GO" intros of every other Doom.

I went into this game expecting a slow, "look what we can do in 3D-now!" semi-horror game, so the start of the game was fine. I know it has a cult following nowadays, but considering its reputation and the way the intro went for me, I'm actually pretty surprised. I'm playing through Doom 3 for the first time on Switch right now and honestly.
